Motorhome Overnight Stays in Portugal: Where Can You Stay and Where Is It Prohibited?

Salema Eco Camp · Algarve

Has this ever happened to you? You’re driving along, the sun is starting to set, you come across a beautiful viewpoint and think: why not stay here for the night?

Travelling by motorhome or campervan gives you the freedom to discover new places, wake up close to nature and explore at your own pace. But there’s one important rule to keep in mind: you can’t spend the night or park a motorhome just anywhere.

In Portugal, legislation prohibits overnight stays and parking of motorhomes in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and areas covered by Coastal Zone Management Plans, except in locations specifically authorised for this purpose.

A beach, a viewpoint or a parking area by the sea is not automatically a place where you can spend the night. A beautiful landscape does not, in itself, give you permission to stay overnight.

In the Algarve and along the Costa Vicentina, where particularly sensitive natural areas can be found, respecting these rules is essential to protecting ecosystems and preserving the places that make this region so special.

In this guide, we explain the main rules for overnight motorhome stays in Portugal, what to keep in mind when travelling around the Algarve, and the alternatives available if you’re looking for an authorised place to stay, whether for one night or several months.

Where Can You Stay Overnight in a Motorhome in Portugal?

Article 50-A of the Portuguese Highway Code establishes specific rules for overnight stays and parking of motorhomes.

There are three essential points you should know.

1. In protected areas and coastal zones covered by the law, overnight stays are prohibited outside authorised location

In Natura 2000 sites, protected areas and zones covered by Coastal Zone Management Plans, overnight stays and parking of motorhomes are prohibited unless the location is specifically authorised for this purpose.

This rule is particularly important for anyone travelling through the Algarve and along the Costa Vicentina, where being close to nature is part of the experience, but also calls for greater responsibility.

2. The 48-hour limit does not mean you can sleep anywhere

In other parts of Portugal, where no specific municipal regulations apply, overnight stays in motorhomes approved by the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) may be permitted for a maximum of 48 hours in the same municipality, provided all other legal requirements are met.

This limit does not constitute general permission to spend the night in any parking area. Specific prohibitions, signage and other applicable regulations still take precedence.

3. Parking does not automatically mean you are allowed to stay overnight or camp

A place where parking is permitted during the day is not necessarily authorised for overnight stays.

Similarly, permission to park does not automatically allow you to open an awning, set up tables and chairs, or use the surrounding space as if it were a campsite pitch.

Before choosing where to spend the night, make sure your intended use of the space is permitted. If you cannot confirm that overnight stays are authorised, choose a campsite instead.

Under Portuguese law, an overnight stay is defined as a motorhome remaining occupied between 10 pm and 7 am.

You can consult Article 50-A of the Portuguese Highway Code in the official Portuguese legislation gazette, Diário da República.

Parking, Overnight Stays and Parking Beyond the Vehicle’s Footprint: What’s the Difference?

Although these terms are often used as if they meant the same thing, there are important differences.

Parking means leaving your vehicle stationary in a permitted location, in accordance with traffic and parking regulations.

An overnight stay means remaining in the motorhome, with occupants inside, between 10 pm and 7 am, as defined by law.

Parking beyond the vehicle’s footprint, for the purposes of Article 50-A, refers to the vehicle occupying an area larger than its own footprint.

In practice, being allowed to park does not mean you can turn public space into an extension of your motorhome.

Opening an awning, setting up tables and chairs or occupying the surrounding area may constitute improper use of the space, depending on the applicable regulations.

If you want to enjoy a meal outdoors, get your chairs out and make the most of the end of the day without worrying about the rules, choose a place designed for that purpose.

Campsites allow you to enjoy the outdoor space more comfortably while respecting the limits of permitted use.

Is It Legal to Sleep in a Motorhome by the Beach?

No. In coastal areas covered by legal restrictions, overnight stays are not permitted outside locations specifically authorised for this purpose.

Being close to the sea does not make a parking area an authorised overnight spot. The same applies to viewpoints, beach access points and other public spaces located within restricted areas.

In the Algarve and along the Costa Vicentina, protecting dunes, cliffs, vegetation and natural habitats is particularly important.

Before parking, keep the following in mind:

  • Check the signs at the location.
  • Check the applicable municipal regulations.
  • Confirm whether the area is protected or subject to coastal restrictions.
  • Use campsites.

You can start by consulting the official Natura 2000 network maps provided by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).

Bear in mind that being outside a Natura 2000 site does not, in itself, mean that overnight stays are permitted. Other legal or municipal restrictions may still apply.

The safest approach is to choose an authorised overnight location in advance. This helps you avoid unpleasant surprises and contributes to preserving the landscape you came to discover.

Motorhomes in the Algarve: How to Travel Responsibly

The Algarve invites you to explore beaches, trails, small towns, local markets and landscapes that change around every bend.

But it is also a region where tourism pressure can have a significant impact on natural spaces, particularly when the same locations are repeatedly used without the appropriate facilities.

Travelling responsibly starts with three simple choices.

1. Choose an authorised place to stay

Don’t rely solely on the presence of other motorhomes. Just because other vehicles are parked somewhere does not mean overnight stays are permitted.

Check the signs, confirm the applicable regulations and prioritise places equipped to welcome motorhomes.

2. Protect the natural environment

Avoid driving or parking on dunes, vegetation, fragile ground or areas not intended for vehicles.

Soil and vegetation can be damaged even when the impact seems small. When these situations happen repeatedly, the effects accumulate.

3. Dispose of waste at designated facilities

Wastewater must only be discharged at authorised facilities. Use the appropriate collection points for rubbish and organic waste.

Never discharge wastewater onto the ground, into waterways or directly into nature.

A single visit may seem insignificant, but repeated use of the same spaces can lead to soil compaction, vegetation loss and waste accumulation.

Travelling consciously doesn’t mean giving up exploration. It means finding ways to do it without compromising the places that brought us there in the first place.

Small Steps Towards More Conscious Travel

You don’t need to change your entire way of travelling to make a difference. Often, it starts with simple choices:

  • Take your rubbish with you until you find a suitable disposal point.
  • Separate your waste whenever possible.
  • Save water and energy.
  • Never discharge wastewater outside designated facilities.
  • Respect the boundaries of parking areas and campsite pitches.
  • Protect wildlife, plants and the peace and quiet of each place.
  • Support local markets, restaurants and small businesses.
  • Choose places equipped to welcome travellers and motorhomes.

And if you stay longer in a region, you’ll have the opportunity to discover more than just the most photographed spots: explore lesser-known paths, experience local rhythms and build a closer connection with the community.

Sometimes, travelling better doesn’t mean covering more kilometres. It means finding a place where you want to stay.

A Place Where Nature Is Part of the Experience

At Salema Eco Camp, sustainability, ecology and regeneration are part of the way we think about and care for our surroundings.

Our S.E.R. department — Sustainability, Ecology and Regeneration — supports practices designed to protect and regenerate the soil, enhance local vegetation and encourage a more balanced relationship with nature.

One example can be found in our campsite pitches themselves, which are separated by native plants that help integrate vegetation into the landscape and contribute to our soil regeneration goals.

We believe a campsite can be more than a place to park and sleep. It can be a space where nature is valued, routines take shape and everyone has the opportunity to discover a more conscious way of travelling.

Because staying somewhere for longer can also be an opportunity to better understand your surroundings and recognise the importance of looking after them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorhome Overnight Stays

Can I sleep in a motorhome parked on the street?

Not everywhere. In protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal planning instruments referred to in the law, overnight stays are only permitted in locations specifically authorised for this purpose. Elsewhere, the conditions set out in Article 50-A of the Portuguese Highway Code and applicable municipal regulations may apply.

Can I spend the night in a motorhome by the sea?

In areas covered by legal restrictions, overnight stays outside specifically authorised locations are prohibited. Always check whether the place is authorised for overnight motorhome stays.

Can I open my awning and set up tables and chairs in a parking area?

You should not assume that permission to park also allows you to use the outdoor space. Setting up equipment and occupying an area larger than the vehicle’s footprint may constitute improper use of the space. To enjoy the outdoors, choose a campsite pitch or an authorised area.

Where can I dispose of my motorhome’s wastewater?

Only at facilities specifically equipped and authorised for this purpose, such as motorhome service stations. Never discharge wastewater onto the ground or into nature.

Do the rules also apply to motorhomes with foreign registration plates?

Yes. Anyone travelling in Portugal must comply with the traffic, parking and overnight stay regulations applicable in the country.

How can I avoid problems when choosing where to stay overnight?

Check the signs, review municipal regulations and confirm whether the location is subject to any restrictions. If you cannot establish that overnight stays are permitted, choose a campsite or a properly authorised area.

Can I stay at Salema Eco Camp for just one night?

Yes. For short stays, we don’t have a minimum number of nights. You can check availability and conditions with our team.

Are there special rates for longer stays?

Yes. The Long Stay programme offers monthly rates for those wishing to stay in the Algarve for a month or more. Prices vary depending on the length of stay and are subject to the programme’s conditions.
